binaries

so in discussing binaries in the novel, my students came up with the whole notion of control vs entrapment. this  in turn applies to the way each character creates or submits to his destiny. it's interesting how most of them think that suicide is not really an exacting of free-will but a resignation to fate. therein lies the paradox, or a cyclical dialectic of whether some people are fated to die in their own hands and should resign to it, or as others subscribe, to prolong their inevitable tragic circumstances as a choice to suffer.
